Frequently asked questions
What's a Block Game?
Block Game is a voxel sandbox game with an emphasis on RPG elements and a living world. Think Ultima or The Elder Scrolls meets Minecraft and you'll have a pretty good idea, with advancement being far more centered on items and crafting.
What do you mean by a living world?
I mean a world that feels like it exists even if it weren't for the player's presence. A world that wasn't created purely to be a playground for the player (even though it obviously is) but one that the player coincidentally inhabits, with lives and stories playing out even if you're not necessarily there to see them.
Why's it called Block Game?
It's a working title. I've got an actual name in mind and eventually I'll go through the hassle of securing all the things necessary to reveal said name.
Will there be fox people? Will I be able to have a fluffy tail? Will I be able to be a gay fox girl?
Absolutely yes to the first two. To the latter, if you identify as a girl then I believe in your ability to be gay: you can do it!
Is this Luanti? A custom engine? Some secret, unknowable third thing?
Block Game's engine is being made from scratch following the long standing artisanal software engineering tradition of "not invented here". It is built in C# using the same framework that brought you games like Kitsune Tails. That custom framework is in turn built on top of FNA.
My computer is, sadly, a literal potato. Will I be able to play this?
You're in luck! Block Game is being developed to run on literal, honest to god, actual potatoes. My main development PC is not especially powerful, but I also have a 2012 gaming laptop. If Block Game doesn't run acceptably on that laptop, which is my low end hardware target, I'll continue optimizing it.
Will there be multiplayer?
Yes, there will be multiplayer. It'll be a run-your-own-server style affair.
Rebindable controls? Gamepad support?
Yes and yes.
Linux support?
The forementioned 2012 laptop runs Linux Mint, so that's a yep. Plus we can't neglect our friends who want to play on Steam Deck, can we?
What's with the weird mouselook in some of the videos on your dev feed? Will there be standard mouselook?
Block Game has two versions of mouselook. The first is your standard first-person mouselook where moving the mouse moves the camera. The second is a mode where holding down a button and moving the mouse moves the camera, like in many online games like World of Warcraft or City of Heroes, and you can toggle between this mode and standard mouselook at the press of a button.
I intend for players to be able to place down non-block items in the world for decoration or display. Since these items won't be constrained to the block grid you'll want to be able to easily drag them around, so it's nice to be able to just drag and drop them without moving the camera. An additional benefit of this on-demand mouselook is that some people can get motion sickness in games like Minecraft where you must always line up whatever you want to target into the center of your view; with on-demand mouselook you can target different blocks on screen by moving your mouse cursor over them without moving the camera.
Will there be modding?
I can't really give an answer about built-in mod support at this time. Having said that, Block Game is written in C# and so easily decompilable so it should be easy to hack the game's code for those who know how. The GUI is also fully reskinnable via a pair of image and JSON files. Finally the game reads entity definitions from a JSON file which can also be edited by the user.
Will there be playable instruments?
(Nobody asked but I'm answering anyway)
Yes. There will be support for two plaintext music formats: the MML (as seen in Mabinogi and Archeage) and ABC notations (as seen in Lord of the Rings Online, Terraria, and Starbound) which will allow players to craft songs and play musical instruments.
Who's making this?
Right now it is I, Eniko Fox, who is making it alone in my spare time. I have been making games for decades, and have been making games professionally for over a decade now. I have made award-winning Mario-style platformers like Kitsune Tails, turn-based procedurally generated death labyrinths like MidBoss, puzzle games like Ultra Hat Dimension, and more.
